This paper studies the connection between journalism and literature, working out in detail the journalist characters‟ patterns identified on the novels written by the journalist and writer Erico Verissimo. However, until reach these patterns, we approached the historical relationship between the two genres, since the press invention, going through the French Revolution, then the journalism and literature present in Brazil and in the Rio Grande do Sul state from 1930. We also approached the journalist writer person and the New Journalism, which are references when dealing with this subject. Another key aspect is the Erico Verissimo biography, that shows the strong connection he always had with the journalism, inclusively becoming founder and president of the Riograndense Press Association (ARI). From then on, we‟ve dealt the journalism as profession and its field formation. In our study, we‟ve found that Mr. Verissimo created 23 journalists‟ characters that appear on 10 of 13 of his novels, creating a real journalistic tribe, conception given (2005) by theorist Nelson Traquina to the expression. After recollecting the journalists‟ model made by Honoré de Balzac, we show our own journalists characters‟ pattern, that is divided into two large groups: the Real Journalist and the Blood Sucker. While the first one is in love with its profession and guides itself by ethic, the second one thinks just in taking political and economic advantages from the journalistic activity. In this sense, we show six subgroups comprising all the journalistic tribe made by Erico Verissimo.
