The Ni-45wt%Ti alloy, called as NITINOL®, presents excellent characteristics of corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, biocompatibility and improved mechanical properties. The properties of Shape Memory Effect Alloys (SMAs) are dependents of the thermomechanical treatments after solidification. The Ni-Ti alloys present recovery of form up to 8%, with recovery temperature varying of -50°C to +110°C, depending on the chemical composition and the microstructure. The main applications of these alloys are: aerospace, naval, nuclear, automobile, utilities, robotics, and medical and odontologic areas. The objective of this work is the study of the SMA in the Ni-Ti alloy and the comparison of structures mechanical and properties by metallographic analyses (optic and electronic microscopy), microhardness Vickers, X rays diffraction and X rays fluorescence in the conditions: commercial wires and after thermal treatments of annealing in different temperatures (TTx): 300°C, 500°C and 700°C. After removed of the furnace, the samples were analysed in relation to the EMF in identical conditions of deformation and recovery temperature. The results were correlated with the resultant microstructure and the conditions of heat treatment. It was concluded that in accordance with the objectives established and the techniques used for characterization and testing, the sample with the best performance was heat treated at 500°C .
