Resumo: The demographic aging phenomenon has been gradually increasing in Brazil. The new conceptions and characteristics of this time of life transform the experience of retirement in a moment more attainable for men and women. If before retirement they are socialized, prepared and demanded culturally and economically in order to perform their work destiny, after the dismissal from the labor occupation men and women over 60 years are faced with the challenge of remeasure their personal motivations to the new conditions that are socially imposed: old age and retirement. This research has the objective of investigating the process of crossing from the condition of active worker to retired worker, and what are the resignifications that old aged men and women give to their lives on the retirement period. To make a profound study, these themes were theoretically observed: aging, work, retirement and quotidian. The research is guided by the critical-dialectic method, highlighting these analysis categories: totality, historicity and contradiction. A semi-structured interview and unsystematic observation were done in order to accomplish the data collection. Due to the fact that this is a gender study, 60 subjects were interviewed – 30 women between the ages of 60 to 96 years old, and 30 men between the ages of 66 to 80 years old. They were all retired due to the time of work, and they belong to different social, economical and cultural realities. They were all residents of the urban part of the city of Porto Alegre/RS. The content analysis method was used to evaluate the data collected, based on Gagneten (1987). In the analysis of the experiences and significations of retirement to men and women, it was possible to verify the ambiguity of feelings like joy, sadness, frustration, relief and loss. This study points out that, for the men, to stop working, to be distant of the friendships acquired in the work and the recognition of their productive value are the most identified ruptures considered as unavoidable losses that come with aging. For the elder women interviewed, the retirement phase is lived as a positive experience because, as she retires, she can retrieve the possibility of taking back the life in a space that has been always hers: the home. For both gender, the loss of friends and close relatives reduces the circle of friends, making possible to many elders feel lonely, reserved or isolated. This is because in most of the cases the descendents already have their own daily occupations and the elder is not always included in the objectives or priorities of the family. Both gender highlight, among the conquests of aging, retirement, life experience, free time, the possibility of becoming grandparents, self knowledge, remarriage, volunteering and return to study. As challenges of aging they point out widowhood, loneliness, diseases and locomotion difficulties. There are many strategies of standing up to reorganize the plans and projects of life and quotidian, and they are related with the socio-economic situation of each elder. These distinct realities lived by the elders contribute to the aging and retirement period to become processes of intense changing in which the acceptance and adaptation will depend on the way each one chose to live them.
