The topic transsexuality led to the writing of this thesis, which sought to study how the social construction process of a transsexual identity is constituted, considering the contradiction among anatomic sex, social construction of gender and the heteronormative identity pattern prevailing in society. For this, a theoretical review on identity and transsexuality, as well as other subjects related to these topics, was undertaken. Thus, using Historical Materialism as a basis, a qualitative research was carried out with a group of 122 candidates for sex reassignment surgery, 97 being of the male to female type and 15 of the female to male type, in addition to 109 relatives. All participants are associated with the Gender Identity Disorder Program of a university hospital in the city of Porto Alegre, the research was carried out from June 1998 to June 2005. The instruments used for data collection were semi-structured interviews, participant observation and focus group. The choice for data examination was the analysis of content, and within this the thematic analysis technique was picked. The data confirm that identity is a result from a social construction that keeps on changing dialetically, constituting itself through body, gender, family, proper name, prejudice, and work, diffracted by the lenses of social reality, which is made up of conscience, contradiction, totality, mediation, daily life, history, and alienation, and, in this movement, it can produce different kinds of identity, among which are the invisible identity, the proxy identity and the autonomous identity.
