O problema da transmissão na epistemologia do testemunho de Jennifer Lackey

Abstract

O testemunho foi negligenciado no estudo epistemológico durante muito tempo. Muito embora tal disciplina específica se utilize de autores clássicos como David Hume, John Locke e Thomas Reid, a sua aparição no cenário contemporâneo só se deu, de fato, após a publicação de Testimony – a philosophical study por C. A. J. Coady no ano de 1992. Os desdobramentos que daí se seguiram foram exaustivos na tentativa de resolver as questões levantadas a partir desse viés da relação que se observa entre dois agentes epistêmicos – anteriormente tomados separadamente. Isso demonstra também que a disciplina, agora chamada de Epistemologia do Testemunho, pode ainda ser melhor inserida como um subtema do campo que surge com Alvin Goldman chamado de Epistemologia Social. Ou seja, o tema aqui abordado é permeado tanto por questões epistêmicas – analíticas – como por questões que tocam o âmbito do social. Mais especificamente, o trabalho que se segue tem por objetivo geral apresentar o ponto de vista da filósofa Jennifer Lackey, que tem o corolário da sua tese sobre a epistemologia do testemunho reunida no livro Learning from Words – Testimony as a Source of Knowledge, de 2008. Como objetivos específicos do trabalho são trazidos os debates em torno da Natureza do Testemunho e da Transmissão vs. Geração de conhecimento percebidas dentro do contexto social-epistêmico. Ambos os temas em foco são cruciais para uma melhor compreensão não só do trabalho de Lackey como para o entendimento crítico da disciplina de modo geral. O rico aporte que a autora traz em sua obra por meio de exaustivos exemplos e contraexemplos são apresentados e debatidos em larga medida para que os mesmos sejam passíveis de análise por um viés crítico.

Testimony has been neglected for a long time during the epistemological study. Although this specific discipline makes use of classical authors such as David Hume, John Locke and Thomas Reid, ist apparition in the contemporary scenario just happened, in fact, after the release of Testimony – a philosophical study by C. A. J. Coady in the year of 1992. The developments that followed from that were exhaustive in the sense of solving the issues set forward in the context of the relationship between two epistemic agents – considered alone before. This shows that the discipline, now called Epistemology of Testimony, can be better understood as a branch of the field forged by Alvin Goldman called Social Epistemology. That is, the subject addressed here it is surrounded by epistemic issues – analytical – as for issues that touch the social field. More specifically, the work that follows has as its main goal present the point of view of the philosopher Jennifer Lackey, that has its upshot a thesis about the epistemology of testimony presented in the book Learning from Words – Testimony as a Source of Knowledge, from 2008. As for specific goals are brought up the debates around the Nature of Testimony and Transmission vs. Generation thesis of knowledge, perceived in the social-epistemic context. Both themes are crucial for a better understanding not just of Lackeys work but also for a more critical view of the discipline in a general way. The great contribution that the author brings in its work by means of exhaustive examples, are here presented and debated largely for a more critical understanding of them.
