A Estrella do Sul e os inimigos da fé católica: 1862 a 1867

Abstract

The confrontation of ideas between Liberalism and Catholicism, and also between them and Protestants institutions was the object of this research. In order to help this study it was utilized the agenda setting hypothesis as a theoretical tool to make a documentation organization that in this case was the weekly A Estrella do Sul, the first official publication of the Diocese of Porto Alegre, capital city of Rio Grande do Sul. This weekly enabled us to realize the strategies used by the Roman Catholic Church to keep the power and politicalreligious position that belonged to it, having in mind a historical stretch between 1862 and 1866. In this sense three major agendas will be analyzed: Protestantism in Rio Grande do Sul, the necessity to form a Roman Clergy and the policy of Rio Grande do Sul. In this last agenda we could perceive the allies and enemies of the Roman Catholic Church by the publication of the weekly. A Estrella do Sul was an important vehicle in the defense context of the position of the Roman Catholic Church in Rio Grande do Sul although, a systematic study has not been done yet. Through this study, the aspects with regard to the catholic religiosity through A Estrella do Sul were contemplated, beginning thus a struggle for power between the Roman Catholic Church and its enemies during the second half of the 19th century, in Rio Grande do Sul.

O confronto de idéias entre o Liberalismo, o catolicismo e as instituições protestantes no Rio Grande do Sul no século XIX foram objeto desta pesquisa. Para tanto, foi utilizada a hipótese do agendamento como ferramenta teórica para a organização documental que neste caso foi o Semanário A Estrella do Sul, primeira publicação oficial da Diocese de Porto Alegre. Esse Semanário possibilitou perceber as estratégias utilizadas pela Igreja Católica para manter o poder e o espaço político-religioso que lhe pertencia, tendo em vista o recorte histórico que compreende esta pesquisa entre os anos de 1862 a 1866. Nesse sentido será analisado três grandes agendamentos: o protestantismo no Rio Grande do Sul, a necessidade da formação de um clero romanizado e a política rio-grandense. Neste último agendamento percebeu-se os aliados e os inimigos da Igreja Católica através da publicação do Semanário. A Estrella do Sul foi um veículo importante no contexto de defesa do espaço da Igreja Católica no Rio Grande do Sul, porém, não havia sido feito ainda um estudo mais sistemático da obra. Através deste trabalho, os aspectos referentes à religiosidade católica através da A Estrella do Sul foram contemplados, marcando assim, um espaço de luta por poder entre a Igreja Católica e seus inimigos na segunda metade do século XIX, no Rio Grande do Sul.
