A relação entre prematuridade e desenvolvimento linguístico: evidências de estudos realizados entre 1980 e 2010

Abstract

O presente trabalho constitui um levantamento de estudos referentes à prematuridade e desenvolvimento linguístico, disponíveis nas bases do Portal de Periódicos da Capes e da Biblioteca Central da Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, com o objetivo de verificar as possíveis consequências resultantes dessa relação. Nesta investigação são feitas duas análises, uma com relação aos aspectos linguísticos ditos afetados pela prematuridade e outra com relação aos processos motivadores de possíveis dificuldades linguísticas, como os fatores sociais e biológicos, as características de amostragem (o tipo de estudo, o componente linguístico avaliado e os instrumentos utilizados para a avaliação). Como hipótese geral, acreditamos que não é possível afirmar que crianças prematuras estão em risco para a linguagem, mesmo com a presença de resultados que apontem para alterações na aquisição da linguagem. Assim, as hipóteses específicas seriam: a) que os fatores biológicos e sociais presentes nos critérios de seleção dos sujeitos impossibilitam a comparação de resultados e a generalização de que a população pré-termo apresenta alterações de linguagem; b) que o tamanho da amostra, em vários estudos, não é o ideal para que a população-alvo seja representada, impossibilitando, assim, que os resultados sejam representativos; c) que há poucos aspectos linguísticos avaliados nas pesquisas, o que inviabiliza afirmar que há problemas na aquisição de linguagem nessa população; e d) que há diferentes tipos de instrumentos utilizados nas pesquisas, os quais revelam diferentes concepções de linguagem, e que impedem que os resultados sejam comparados entre eles.Para a verificação dessas hipóteses, este trabalho desenvolve-se da seguinte maneira: o primeiro capítulo refere-se à introdução; o segundo à revisão de literatura que fundamenta o trabalho; o terceiro à apresentação do método utilizado para seleção do corpus para a análise; o quarto à análise e discussão dos dados; e, por fim, as considerações finais.

The present work comprises an analysis of studies concerning prematurity and language development, available in the files of Portal de Periódicos da Capes and of the main library of Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, with the aim of verifying the possible consequences resulting from that relation. In this investigation, two analyses are accomplished, one in relation to linguistic aspects affected by prematurity and other in relation to processes that motivate possible linguistic difficulties, such as biological and social factors, sample characteristics (study design, the linguistic component assessed and the instruments used for evaluation). As a general hypothesis, we believe that it is not possible to affirm that preterm children are at risk for language, even in the presence of results that point to alterations in the language acquisition process. Thus, the specific hypotheses are: a) that biological and social factors present in the subject selection criteria preclude the comparison of results and the generalization that the preterm population shows language alterations; b) that the size of the samples, in many studies, is not the ideal one for the target-population to be portrayed, precluding, then, the results to be representative; c) that there are few linguistic aspects assessed in the studies, what prevents the affirmation that there are problems in the language acquisition process of this population; and d) that there are different types of instruments used in the studies, which reveals different concepts of language and impede the results of being compared among them.In order to verify theses hypotheses, this work is developed in the following way: the first chapter refers to the introduction; the second, to the literature review that substantiates this work; the third, to the presentation of the method used to select the corpus for analysis; the fourth, to the analysis and discussion of data; and at last, the final considerations.
