Abstract: Plato is known, above all, and among other aspects of his philosophy, for his ‘theory of Ideas’. This theory can be found in its best formulation in the dialogues of the intermediate phase of the philosopher's literary production, and the exponents are the Republic, Phaedo, Phaedrus, The Banquet and Timaeus. However, Parmenides, a dialogue that is in the threshold between the intermediate and the late phase in Plato´s work, presents serious criticism to the theory of Ideas, especially in its first part (127d6-135b4). The problem that is raised, starting from Parmenides, and that divides interpreters and scholars of Plato´s thoughts can be expressed in three questions: firstly, is the criticism, present in the first part of Parmenides, internal or external to the theory of Ideas? Secondly, is such criticism lethal to the theory of Ideas, by the way the latter is formulated in the intermediate dialogues? Finally, would Plato have or have not abandoned the theory of Ideas after Parmenides? In the present work, starting from a reconstruction and an analysis of the theory of Ideas in the intermediate dialogues, especially in Phaedo and in the Republic (first part of our text), we intend to demonstrate the fundamental theoretical principles that lie in the construction of such theory: the structure of the ‘one over many’, the principle of the ‘homonymy’, the ‘ontological dualism’ and the hypothesis of ‘participation’. In the second part of our text, we reconstruct and analyze, in full detail, the six critical objections appointed to the theory of Ideas in the first part of Parmenides. We intend to demonstrate, thus, that the criticism aims at exactly those four fundamental theoretical principles that lie in the basis of the construction of the theory of Ideas in the intermediate dialogues. Therefore, the scope of our work is the demonstration that the criticism to the theory of Ideas, present in the first part of Parmenides, is internal, as well as lethal, to the theory itself, according to its formulation in the intermediate dialogues. In that way, as we demonstrate that Plato is critical of himself in Parmenides (i. e., critical of his own theory of Ideas), a possibility of a substantial change in the platonic ontology of the dialogues written later to that dialogue is open, especially in the Sophist and in Philebus - we stress that the positive demonstration of a new platonic ontology in those subsequent dialogues to Parmenides won't be done in this work. Put another way, it is our hypothesis that Plato abandons the theory of Ideas just as it had been built in the intermediate dialogues (especially in Phaedo and in the Republic), due to the insoluble aporias that such theory holds, above all in relation to the hypothesis of ‘participation’ and to the ‘ontological dualism’, as the philosopher shows us in the first part of his dialogue Parmenides.
