Famílias, cuidados e deficiências: um estudo a partir de famílias de camadas médias de Porto Alegre

Abstract

Este estudo aborda a temática da deficiência e as relações que a partir dela se estabelecem no âmbito familiar, buscando aproximar as percepções e práticas sociais contemporâneas frente a diferença. O presente trabalho objetiva perceber as relações que se evidenciam em famílias de camadas médias portoalegrenses a partir do nascimento ou adoção de um(a) filho(a) deficiente; como homens e mulheres organizam suas vidas para dar conta da responsabilidade parental e quais as formas de cuidado praticadas com o(a) deficiente em família. Para tanto, foram realizadas doze entrevistas com pais e mães de crianças ou jovens com deficiência física e/ou intelectual, na cidade de Porto Alegre, no período compreendido entre maio e dezembro de 2010. A fim de servir como contraponto às experiências relatadas foi também entrevistada uma mãe de grupo popular. O estudo demonstrou que apesar do reconhecimento da sociedade dos direitos dos(as) deficientes o cuidado com estas pessoas ainda é tarefa desempenhada basicamente pela família e assumida principalmente pelas mulheres. A partir da experiência de convívio com uma pessoa deficiente as famílias manifestaram a ocorrência de mudanças nas suas vidas, a formulação de estratégias que oportunizassem uma real inclusão social de seus filho(as) e a importância da mudança de mentalidade para a construção da cidadania dessas pessoas.

This study discusses the issue of deficiency and the relations that are established within the family context, aiming to approximate the contemporaneous social practices and perceptions regarding difference. The present paper aims to understand the relations that are emphasized in middle-class families from Porto Alegre since the birth or adoption of a child with special needs; how men and women organize their lives so as to cope with parental responsibility and which ways of taking care are used in the family to deal with the handicapped. In order to do so, twelve interviews have been carried out with fathers and mothers whose little child or teenager has mental and/or physical handicap, in the city of Porto Alegre, from May through December 2010. So as to be used as a counterpoint to the reported experiences, a mother with a less privileged background was also interviewed. The study has proved that in spite of the acknowledgement society has of the rights of the handicapped, the care with these people is still a task basically performed by family and mainly done by women. Having the experience of living together with a handicapped person as a starting point, the families have expressed the occurrence of changes in their lives, the elaboration of strategies which created possibilities for a real social inclusion for their child(ren) and the importance of mentality change for the development of these people’s citizenship.
