Entre o dólar e a cruz: a doutrina social católica nos EUA no contexto do new deal a partir das ideias do padre John Ryan e da revista católica Commonweal

Abstract

O presente trabalho é um estudo sobre o debate católico referente a questão social nos EUA no contexto da Grande Depressão (1929-1934), tendo por referência o periódico católico Commonweal. Seu objetivo consiste em identificar e analisar as principais questões discutidas pelos intelectuais católicos a respeito da chamada questão social nos EUA no contexto da Grande Depressão, as soluções por eles propostas e o papel do Estado na sua superação. A investigação dos editoriais e das colunas de opinião do principal periódico católico daquele período permite compreender melhor esse debate e entender a participação da Igreja, revelando também divergência de opiniões existentes. Em termos metodológicos, vamos nos utilizar ao longo deste estudo da análise textual discursiva, ou análise de conteúdo, com as cinco etapas propostas por Moraes (1999). Para ele, a primeira etapa seria a preparação das informações, seguida da Unitarização, Categorização, Descrição e, pôr fim, a Interpretação. Os editoriais e as colunas de opinião escolhidas para análise estarão separados em três categoriais, sendo elas “Política”, “Economia” e “Questão Social”.

The present work is a study of the Catholic debate regarding social issues in the USA in the context of the Great Depression (1929-1934), taking as reference the Catholic periodical Commonweal. Its objective is to identify and analyze the main issues discussed by Catholic intellectuals regarding the so-called social issue in the USA in the context of the Great Depression, the solutions they proposed and the role of the State in overcoming it. The investigation of the editorials and opinion columns of the main Catholic periodical of that period allows us to better understand this debate and understand the participation of the Church, also revealing divergences in existing opinions. In methodological terms, throughout this study we will use discursive textual analysis, or content analysis, with the five stages proposed by Moraes (1999). For him, the first stage would be the preparation of information, followed by Unitarization, Categorization, Description and, finally, Interpretation. The editorials and opinion columns chosen for analysis will be separated into three categories, namely “Politics”, “Economy” and “Social Issues”.
