Um mosaico do Brasil através das fotorreportagens de José Medeiros em O Cruzeiro (1946-1962)

Abstract

Esta dissertação tem como objetivo compreender o olhar de José Medeiros, o primeiro fotorepórter brasileiro a atuar na revista semanal O Cruzeiro, da rede dos Diários Associados. Abrange o período de 1946 à 1962, período em que Medeiros esteve vinculado ao periódico e produziu a maior parte de seu acervo fotográfico. Visa compreender de que forma a sociedade brasileira foi retratada por este fotógrafo neste período de intensas transformações sociais, qual a motivação para o registro dos diferentes grupos sociais brasileiros, e também o papel dessas imagens no contexto em que foram veiculadas. Para isso, tem como principais fontes e objetos de estudo as fotorreportagens publicadas na revista O Cruzeiro, no período entre 1946 e 1962. Para analisar estas imagens utilizam-se os descritores icônicos (o que aparece na fotografia) e os descritores formais (como aparece na fotografia), juntamente com o conceito de cultura visual, a partir do qual é feita a divisão dos capítulos da dissertação: visual, visível e visão. Neste momento do pós-guerra de reorganização política, econômica, social e cultural, estas fotografias estiveram presentes como parte da cultura visual da época, e circularam em grande escala pelo Brasil, através do periódico com maior tiragem do período. Também atuaram no processo de proposição de uma nova visualidade nacional, através da representação de temas em voga da época, como a identidade nacional e a reaproximação das raízes culturais brasileiras, visando assegurar espaço para todos no mosaico cultural do país.

This dissertation has as objective to understand José Medeiros’ look, the first Brazilian photo reporter who acted in the weekly magazine O Cruzeiro from Diários Associados network. It comprehends the period from 1946 to 1962, when Medeiros was linked to the newspaper and produced the majority of his photographic heritage. It aims to understand how the Brazilian society was depicted by this photographer during that period of intense social changes; what it was the motivation for registering the different Brazilian social groups and, also, the role that those images played in the context where they were spread. For that, the photo-reports published in the magazine O Cruzeiro, between 1946 and 1962, are the main sources and objects of study. In order to analyze these images, the iconic descriptors (what appears in the photo) and the formal descriptors (how appears in the photo) are used jointly with the concept of visual culture, and from there, it is done the division of the chapters of the dissertation: visual, visible and vision. In that postwar moment of political, economical, social and cultural reorganization, these photographs were present as a part of the visual culture of the epoch and they circulated on a large scale in Brazil through the newspaper with the highest print run of the period. They also acted in the process of proposition of a new national vision by representing the themes in vogue of the epoch, as the national identity and the rapprochement of the Brazilian cultural roots in order to assure a space for everybody in the cultural mosaic of the country.
