Cariri e Tarairiú?: culturas tapuais nos sertões da Paraíba

Abstract

This paper aims to trace the Tapuia, Cariri and Tarairiú, cultural profiles that inhabited the territory of Paraíba to the nineteenth century. Overall, the historiography has shown distortions about the Indians of Paraíba of postcontact period, with masking on these human groups, in many cases denying the existence of the Indians Tarairiús or confuse them with Cariris. Not exist support to affirm the two groups have existed in Paraíba. Thus, we launched two bias to study them, and from there, do or do not verify the existence of such groups, their literature and documentation certifying the time so poorly reliable and distorted, the existence of Cariri and Tarairiú in the Sertões of Paraíba, and activities of archaeological nature, digging up archaeological sites in four likely places inhabited by these groups, two sites for each ethnicity: Pinturas I e Furna dos Ossos – Cariri; Cabaças I and Tanque do Capim - Tarairiú. This activity aims to collect traces of material culture of these human groups. From the junction of two bias, we grant to trace the cultural profile of each group, and seek the means of presentation. The research becomes relevant to the paraiban people in that extent of recover, also the cultural legacy inherited by these groups in the formation of contemporary society. Thus, we identified that the Indians Cariris and Tarairiús, finally took up the Sertões of Paraíba were distinct groups, so giving them different characteristics that serve as forms of presentation. In general, we see a strong heritage socio / economic / cultural / environmental assimilated by paraiban people from these groups, with our search retrieves the image of these ethnic groups, making them talk, meeting with a gift that is to honor the history of Cariri and Tarairiú and their descendants in Paraíba, muted by the ferocity of the colonizing process.

O presente trabalho visa traçar o perfil cultural dos Tapuias Cariris e Tarairiús que habitaram o território da Paraíba até o século XIX. De forma geral, a historiografia tem mostrado distorções acerca dos índios da Paraíba do póscontato, existindo encobrimento acerca desses grupos humanos, em muitos casos, negando-se a existência dos índios Tarairiús ou confundindo-os com os Cariris. Inexistem suportes que afirmem terem existidos esses dois grupos na Paraíba. Dessa forma, lançamos mão de dois vieses para estudá-los, e a partir daí, comprovarmos ou não a existência desses grupos: literatura e documentação da época que atestam, de forma pouco confiável e distorcida, a existência dos Cariris e Tarairiús nos Sertões da Paraíba, e atividades de cunho arqueológico, escavando-se quatro sítios arqueológicos em prováveis lugares habitados por esses grupos, sendo dois sítios correspondentes a cada etnia: Pinturas I e Furna dos Ossos - Cariri; e Cabaças I e Tanque do Capim - Tarairiú. Essa atividade visa à coleta de traços da cultura material desses grupos humanos. A partir da junção dos dois vieses, conseguimos subsídios para traçar o perfil cultural de cada grupo, bem como, buscar seus meios de apresentações. A pesquisa torna-se relevante para o povo paraibano na medida em que resgatamos, também, o legado cultural herdado por esses grupos no processo de formação da sociedade contemporânea. Assim, identificamos que os índios Cariris e Tarairiús, definitivamente, ocuparam os Sertões da Paraíba, eram grupos distintos; portanto, apresentando características diferentes que lhes servem como formas de apresentações. No geral, percebemos a forte herança sócio/econômico/cultural/ambiental que o povo paraibano assimilou desses grupos, sendo que nossa pesquisa recupera a imagem desses grupos étnicos, fazendo-os falar, cumprindo com uma dádiva que se honra com a história dos Cariris e Tarairiús e com os seus descendentes na Paraíba, emudecidos pela ferocidade do processo colonizador.
