Diferenças descritivas do movimento-Wh interrogativo nas fases da teoria da gramática

Abstract

Com o presente trabalho desejamos realizar um estudo de caráter histórico-teórico da problemática do Movimento-Wh em frases interrogativas, durante as diferentes fases evolutivas da Teoria da Gramática (TG), de 1957 até a atualidade. Discutimos as três fases principais da TG, a saber: a Gramática Gerativo-Transformacional, o Programa de Princípios e Parâmetros e o Programa Minimalista. Consideramos que o Movimento-Wh Interrogativo nas línguas sempre constituiu um fenômeno merecedor de tratamento investigativo especial, exigindo descrições e explicações minuciosas. Tais exigências acabaram por provocar, mesmo que indiretamente, alterações no arcabouço teórico da TG, impulsionando os importantes processos evolutivos pelos quais a teoria passou ao longo das décadas. Procuramos desenhar um panorama histórico-teórico das fases da TG em relação às soluções encontradas por cada uma delas para descrever e explicar tal fenômeno lingüístico. Ilustramos a ocorrência do Movimento-Wh com exemplos em diversas línguas, especialmente em português brasileiro e inglês. A partir da compilação realizada, acreditamos ter condições de compreender a evolução da TG na tentativa constante de melhor explicar e descrever o Movimento-Wh, destacando os detalhamentos e aspectos relevantes concernentes a tal fenômeno sintático presente nas mais diversas línguas.

The present study aims at studying the Interrogative Wh-Movement within the different stages of development undergone by the Theory of Grammar (TG), from 1957 to the present, from both a historical and a theoretical perspective. We address the three main evolutionary phases of TG, namely: the Generative-Transformational Grammar, the Principles and Parameters Program and the Minimalist Program. We take it that Interrogative Wh-Movement has always been a linguistic phenomenon deserving of accurate investigative treatment, therefore requiring thorough descriptions and explanations. Such demands have fostered, even if indirectly, alterations in TG‟s theoretical framework, which has promoted the substantial changes the theory has suffered throughout its existence. We have sought to establish a historical and theoretical prospect of the main phases of TG as far as the solutions elicited by the theory in dealing with such linguistic aspect are concerned. We illustrate the occurrence of Wh-Movement with examples from a variety of languages, although we have focused on both Brazilian Portuguese and English. We believe the present study has enabled us to better understand both the Theory of Grammar itself and the effort this theory has made to successfully describe and explain Wh-Movement.
