The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of oral lesion that were biopsied and directed to the Pathology Laboratory of the Stomatology Service of São Lucas Hospital (PUC/RS - Brazil), in the years of 2000 to 2002, regarding the concordance between their clinical and histopathological diagnoses. For this, data including gender and age of patient, kind of biopsy procedure, location, clinical and histopathological diagnoses of lesions where collected from 692 biopsy files. Among the analyzed patients, 59.5% were from female gender and 40.5% fo male gender. Patients between the fourth and seventh decade of life (70.9%) were the more affected. Excisional biopsies comprehended 70.6% of cases, while incisional ones comrresponded to 27.6% and 1.8% to cytologic smears. The most prevalent lesion was fibroepitelial hyperplasia (28.6%), followed by squamous cell carcinoma (12.0%), salivary retention cyst (9.4%) and palatal papillary hyperplasia (8.1%). It was concluded that the clinical and histopathological diagnosis were coincident en 79.9% of cases, and that the lesions of inflammatory nature of traumatic origin were the most prevalent, followed by malignant epithelial neoplasias.
