The research analyzes the reorganization of the Brazilian blackman movement after the coup of 64, from a study about Porto Alegre's Grupo Palmares, between 1971 and 1978. The group was responsible for the November 20th proposal that would symbolize the black resistance as an alternative for the May 13th celebrations, which contained the idea of granted freedom. Palmares was also one of the precursors of the modern black movement, characterized by the construction of a new black identity, with local and global aspects. When affirming and organizing themselves as an ethnic group, they adopt a position and a subversive speech for placing in check structural concepts of the Brazilian society as racial democracy, identity and national culture. Moreover, they had questioned the status quo because of the social place relegated to the blackman and had faced the dictatorship when organizing itself as movement that contests for better social and economic conditions, and for more political space.
