Decadência de Portugal e o Cesarismo: um estudo sobre a historiografia de J. P. de Oliveira Martins

Abstract

A presente dissertação consiste em uma análise a respeito da historiografia de Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira Martins enfatizando suas concepções com relação ao processo de decadência da nação portuguesa, bem como sobre as construções historiográficas relativas ao conceito de cesarismo. Abordar-se-á também o contexto político e cultural em que se desenvolveu a Geração de 1870 em Portugal e como a ideia de Decadência articula-se enquanto eixo de coesão entre seus membros (focando na fundamentação teórica do mesmo no pensamento de Oliveira Martins, em especial, na lógica dialética hegeliana e nas teorias do organicismo social). Empregar-se-á como metodologia de pesquisa as categorias históricas de Espaço de Experiência e Horizonte de Expectativa, de Reinhart Koselleck, para a constituição de uma semântica da história adequada para estudar as analogias entre os ciclos históricos de Portugal em relação à República Romana. Por fim, analisar-se-á os principais postulados do socialismo catedrático e como estes influenciaram o pensamento político de Oliveira Martins, refletindo-se também em sua historiografia. Busca-se, desta forma, problematizar tanto as fronteiras entre a produção historiográfica e o discurso político, quanto às releituras da História que possibilitaram múltiplas interpretações acerca da identidade nacional portuguesa.

This dissertation consists of an analysis about Joaquim Pedro de Oliveira Martins’s historiography, focusing over his conceptions about the decay of the Portuguese nation; and about the historiographical constructions related to de Caesarism concept. It will be also analyzed the politic and cultural contexts of development of the Generation of 1870, and how the ideia of decay articulated the cohesion between its members (focusing on its theorist theoretical foundation on Oliveira Martins’s thought, specially, the Hegel’s dialectic logic and the theories about social organicism). It will be used as research methodology the historical categories of Space of Experience and Horizon of Expectation of Reinhart Koselleck, intending to constitute a historical hermeneutic adequate to study the analogies established between the historical circles of Portugal’s history, and its relation with the Roman Republic. It will be also analysed the main postulates of the cathedratic socialism, and its influence over Oliveira Martins’s political thought, also reflecting on his historiography. It’s intended to problematize the borders between historical production and political thought, as much about the readings of Portuguese history that provided multiple interpretations about the Portuguese national identity.
