| Abstract: | Since the beginning of colonization, on the 16th century, the Prata’s River area raised interests from the Lusitanian Crown and the slow path to the establishment of a Portuguese enclave in that portion of Southern America wasn’t an easy task to achieve. Many attempts of the Lusitanian Crown to get settle down in that area were unsuccessful especially because of the Latin-Hispanic defense borders that was organized due to the closeness to the Portuguese territory. However, in the beginning of the 19th century, with all the deep changes in America and the European context, the possibilities of expansion of the Portugal State to the Prata’s River area were noticed. The purpose of this search is unveil the politic tactics adopted by Portugal to install its Army troops, on 1811, at Banda Oriental of Uruguay River, located at a key-zone to control the outflow of the Spanish production inside Southern America. Besides, it was an important place for commercial routes in South Atlantic during 18th century and beginning of 19th century. We based this search in some aspects that can be helpful for the understanding of this period and consequently of the Portuguese tactics, such as the Royal family’s getaway to Brazil, the imprisonment of the Spanish Royal family, the astuteness of Carlota Joaquina princess, the projects of Count of Linhares, the relationship between the closest subordinates to the prince and the chief group, the contests for power at Bacia Platina, the wars started by Buenos Aires Junta inside the continent and the lack of economic sources of Spain. The methodology used was a resume of several documented sources, especially personal letters, statements and declarations and some topics of an extended historiography about the period. We can notice that Portugal as soon as it was establishing its state institutions at colonial territory and feeling the necessity of limiting its action space, couldn’t only work through its perspective. Therefore, we believe that the possibilities to understand the period it is connected to the interdependency on the politic and economic scenery, not only the American but the European as well.
Desde o início da colonização, ainda no século XVI, a região do Rio da Prata suscitava interesses da Coroa lusitana e a lenta caminhada para fixação de um enclave português naquela porção da América Meridional não foi um projeto fácil de se empreender. Muitas vezes foram malfadadas as tentativas da Coroa lusitana de se fixar naquela região, especialmente porque a defesa das fronteiras hispano-platinas era organizada em razão da proximidade com os portugueses. Porém, no início do século XIX, com as profundas alterações ocorridas não apenas na América, mas principalmente no contexto europeu, é que seriam percebidas claras possibilidades de estender os limites do Estado português até o Rio da Prata. O objetivo deste estudo, portanto, é desvelar as políticas implementadas por Portugal para fazer entrar tropas de seu exército, em 1811, na Banda Oriental do rio Uruguai, situada justamente numa região-chave para o controle do escoamento de toda produção espanhola do interior da América Meridional, ponto importante para as rotas comerciais que cruzariam o Atlântico Sul durante o século XVIII e início do XIX. Para isso, apoiamo-nos em alguns aspectos que podem ser importantes para a compreensão do período e, conseqüentemente, das políticas portuguesas, como a fuga da família real portuguesa para o Brasil, o aprisionamento da família real espanhola, a astúcia da princesa Carlota Joaquina, os projetos do conde de Linhares, as relações entre os súditos mais próximos do príncipe regente com a camada dirigente, as disputas de poder na bacia platina, as guerras empreendidas pela Junta de Buenos Aires no interior do continente e a falta de recursos espanhóis.A metodologia utilizada para tanto foi a análise pormenorizada de diversas fontes documentais, especialmente correspondências pessoais, ofícios e declarações da época, além de algumas referências de uma extensa historiografia produzida sobre o período. Podemos observar, neste sentido, que Portugal, à medida que foi consolidando as instituições do Estado em território colonial e sentindo cada vez mais necessidade de delimitar seu espaço de ação, não podia operar apenas segundo sua perspectiva. Assim, acreditamos que as possibilidades de se compreender melhor o período giram em torno das interdependências do complexo cenário político e econômico, tanto americano quanto europeu. |
