| Abstract: | As cadeias elásticas são amplamente utilizadas pelos ortodontistas devido à sua facilidade de uso, ao conforto ao paciente, à praticidade na higienização e ao baixo custo. No entanto, por causa da absorção de líquidos e de outros fatores, como mudanças na temperatura, elas sofrem deformação permanente e degradação das forças geradas inicialmente. As tecnologias empregadas para a fabricação das cadeias elásticas e os materiais utilizados definem a velocidade e a quantidade de degradação de força que estes materiais irão sofrer quando distendidos em meio bucal. A fim de avaliar a degradação de força de cadeias elásticas de seis fabricantes, foi colocado um dispositivo preso ao aparelho fixo de 20 pacientes em tratamento ortodôntico, onde segmentos, com quatro elos cada, destas cadeias elásticas ficaram distendidos com uma força inicial de 150 gramas pelo período de 3 semanas. Mediu-se a força alcançada pelas cadeias no intervalo de 24 horas, uma semana e três semanas. Todas as marcas comerciais avaliadas sofreram degradação de força estatisticamente significante já na primeira medição, que variou de 5,5% a 37,66%. No final da primeira semana, a variação foi de 8,16% a 44,5% e, no final das três semanas, de 12,33% a 47,33%. Ao término do experimento, todos apresentavam forças suficientes para a movimentação dentária.
The elastic chains are used extensively in orthodontics treatments because they are comfortable to the patient, easy to use, hygienic and low cost. However, when stretched in the oral environment, due to the absorption of water and temperature changes, the elastic chains undergo a permanent deformation and degradation of the initial force. The technology employed by the elastic chain manufacturer and the material used defines how fast and how much the force degradation of this material occurs when in oral environment. To evaluate the force degradation in elastic chain from six different commercial brands, the elastic elements were stretched upon jigs fixed to the brackets of 20 patients under orthodontic treatment. The elastic chains stayed with an initial force of 150 grammas during 3 weeks and the force displayed by the chains measured in the first 24 hours, one week and 3 weeks. All samples suffered relaxation of the initial force. In the first 24 hours, the degradation measured was from 5. 5% to 37. 66%. In one week, from 8. 16% to 44. 5% and in three weeks, from 12. 33 to 47. 33%. In the end of the evaluation, all the elastic chains presented necessary forces to move teeth. |
