| Resumen: | Nesta pesquisa buscamos fazer a história da indústria de extração de carvão mineral da região de São Jerônimo, a partir do estudo das estratégias das companhias de mineração sulinas e das rotinas de trabalho entre os anos de 1883 a 1945. O ineditismo do estudo dessa temática levou-nos a buscar e a organizar o material disperso até então produzido por dirigentes dessas companhias e pelos poderes públicos, incluindo textos escritos por membros da sociedade. Foi necessária, ainda, a pesquisa numa vasta quantidade de periódicos de cunho regional e nacional, a classificação de um grande acervo de imagens sobre a indústria carbonífera e a construção de um corpus documental proveniente de depoimentos orais, que foram muito importantes, porque trouxeram à tona as estratégias das companhias de mineração junto à comunidade carbonífera. Essa investigação nos levou à compreensão de que as companhias de mineração foram muito ativas no sentido de formar uma rede de relações entre elas, os poderes públicos e a comunidade local. Através de seus discursos e de suas práticas, as companhias apresentavam a perspectiva de auto-suficiência de carvão mineral para o país e sua competência para a geração de investimentos públicos. Com a intenção de atrair e manter os trabalhadores nas minas, as companhias ofereciam facilidades para o cotidiano deles, tais como acesso a moradia, educação, saúde e lazer. Esse estudo permitiu também mapear aspectos da ação dos poderes públicos junto à indústria carbonífera, assim como as motivações e as justificativas elaboradas pelos trabalhadores da comunidade local para a realização da labuta diária numa atividade de alta periculosidade nas profundezas da terra.
In this reserarch we aim to write the history of the coal mining industry in the São Jerônimo region, from the study of the strategies of the southern brazilian coal mining companies and its workplace routines between the years 1883 to 1945. The novel character of such theme’s study lead us to search and organize scattered materials made until now by the leaders of the coal mining companies and by the public powers, including texts written by members of the society. It was necessary, yet, to research a vast amount of regional and national newspapers, magazines and newsletters, the classification of a large database of images regarding the coal mining industry and the elaboration of an documental corpus originated in oral statements, which were very important, because they revealed the coal mining’s companies strategies towards the coal mining society. This research lead us to understand that the coal mining companies were very active in the sense that they’ve created a network between them, the public powers and the local community. Through its discourses and its praxis, the mining companies presented the perspective of self-sufficency of mineral coal to the whole country and its competence to the generation of public investment. Having the goal of attracting and mantaining the coal workers on the mines, the companies offered advantages for their daily life, such as housing, education, health and leisure. This study also allowed the mapping of aspects of the public powers’ action with the coal industry as well as its motivations and excuses elaborated by the workers of the local community to undertake the daily labor in a high risk activity in the depths of the land. |
